Manhattan, New York Plastic Surgeon Celebrates 100th Buttock Implant Surgery

Manhattan, NY (PRWeb) November 21, 2006 -- Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Douglas Senderoff, MD of Manhattan, New York announced today that he has performed his 100th buttock implant surgery. Dr. Senderoff has been performing buttock implant surgery since 2001 and has noticed a significant increase in demand for this procedure. "Buttock augmentation used to be a novelty procedure but I now receive requests for this operation every day," reports Doctor Senderoff. "When I first started performing buttock implant surgery it was so rare in the United States that American plastic surgeons did not even keep statistics on how many patients underwent buttock augmentation."

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2,361 buttock augmentations were performed in 2005 as compared to 614 procedures in 2002 the first year that statistics were kept by the society. In comparison 364,610 breast implant procedures and 455,489 liposuction procedures were performed in 2005 by U.S. plastic surgeons.

Buttock augmentation surgery involves inserting a solid silicone implant either within or above the buttock muscle known as the gluteus maximus. The result is a fuller, rounder, more projecting buttock. Although this procedure is quite common in South America, plastic surgeons in the United States were slow to adopt this operation due to lack of experience and specific training. As patient demand for buttock augmentation has increased a select group of plastic surgeons have stepped up to meet their needs. According to the Board Certified Plastic Surgeon (who is in private practice in Manhattan, New York,) Doctor Senderoff (who has one of the largest series of buttock implant patients in the Northeast) there are not many plastic surgeons that are comfortable enough performing buttock augmentation to offer it to the patients in their community. To remedy this situation Dr. Senderoff has created several teaching DVDs on the surgical technique of buttock augmentation which are used to educate surgeons interested in learning how to perform this operation. "When I began performing this operation there were very few surgeons I could discuss surgical technique with or how to manage complications," said Dr. Senderoff. "The only instructional videos that were available were in Spanish."

While buttock augmentation is a safe and gratifying procedure it does pose several risks such as infection and implant asymmetry. Dr. Senderoff who has analyzed the medical records of his 100 patients who underwent buttock augmentation is preparing the data for presentation. He advocates that surgeons keep track of the success and complication rates of their patients in order to improve surgical outcomes in the future. While buttock augmentation using an implant is becoming more common patients should make sure their surgeon performs this operation regularly before proceeding with surgery.
