Playwright's Series of High School Monologues Debuts June 17, 18 in New York City
(PRWEB) June 5, 2008 -- One of the most daunting challenges facing high school drama teachers and their student actors is finding suitable comic monologues (www.BroadwayClubhouse.com) for college auditions. Inspired by his acting students at LIHSA, New York's Long Island High School for the Arts, playwright and drama mentor Michael Tester has created his own solution in "Most Likely To: The Senior Superlative Monologues" (www.BroadwayClubhouse.com), to workshop in the Fredrick Loewe Room of The Dramatists Guild of America June 17 and 18.
"With most theatre programs requiring prospective students to prepare age-appropriate pieces, and many public school administrations wary of the very material their pupils have a passion for, young artists are often caught between the First Amendment and The Drama Police," Tester says. "'Juno' and 'Spring Awakening' may have won top prizes in their field, but try telling that to a PTA still debating the artistic virtue of Elvis' hips."
Using a high school awards ceremony as its unifying arc, "Most Likely To" showcases the seriocomic musings of students labeled Most Popular and Class Rebel, Best Hair and Biggest Flirt, Most Likely to Become America's Next Idol, and, of course, Class Clown -- a title Tester was crowned in high school. "Most Likely To" features an all-teen cast of 2008 LIHSA graduates: Andrew J. Beck, Dee Brown, Alex Greif, Katherine Hoffmann, Lyle Mackston, Melissa Rapelje, Lauren Renner, Sarah Sixt, Joseph Wegmann and Jesse Zeidman.
After their stage debut, Most Likely To's Senior Superlative Monologues will be made available to amateur and professional drama instructors and students looking for fresh material.
"While it is vital to have the classics in your repertoire, balancing the likes of Williams, Miller, and O'Neil with a quirky contemporary piece you can relate to can really set you apart, honest to blog -- to risk a quote from Diablo Cody's 'Juno'," Tester says.
Tester made his writing debut in London fringe with the satire "Amoebas on Parade!!", later hailed by the New York Times as displaying "the development potential of a major humorist."
"Most Likely To: The Senior Superlative Monologues" (www.BroadwayClubhouse.com) takes place under the direction of Abbe Gail Gross, head of the theatre department at LIHSA. "Most Likely To: The Senior Superlative Monologues" will workshop in the Fredrick Loewe Room of The Dramatists Guild of America, 1501 Broadway, NYC. Daryl Eisenberg Casting. Produced by BroadwayClubhouse.com.
Michael Tester's work includes "The Divalogues" (The Duplex), "Hollywood Exposed!" (Actor's Playhouse, Miami), "The Mummy Musical" (Dramatic Publishing) and "The Pirate Musical" (Baker's Plays). As co-author, Tester's work includes "The Awesome 80s Prom" (Chicago and NYC; Winner: National Interactive Show of the Year) and the NFAA gala "Body & Soul" at The Baryshnikov Center.
