Thai Massage in New York City

Thai massage (sometimes called Thai yoga massage) is generally more rigorous than classical forms of massage. New York City is a hub of holistic centers, spas, and physical therapy clinics offering all manner of massages, including the increasingly popular Thai massage. Should you choose to try Thai massage, you might think of it as having yoga done to you. The therapist slowly moves your body into a series of yoga-like stretches using his or her hands, feet, legs and knees. Acupressure, rhythmic muscle compression and joint mobilization can all be applied during this type of treatment. Many people say that receiving Thai message is like doing yoga without having to work.

Thai massage is typically given with the recipient lying on a floor mat, fully clothed. The massage therapist leans on the recipient's body using hands and forearms to apply firm rhythmic pressure all over the body. There is a standard procedure and rhythm to the massage, generally following the Sen energy lines on the body (the Sen are comparable to Chinese meridians). In some gestures, the therapist's legs and feet are used to fixate the body or limbs of the recipient. In other gestures, hands fixate the body, while the feet do the massaging. Usually no oils or lotions are applied, but sometimes a hot herbal compress is used to relax and warm the body.

A Thai massage session usually proceeds very slowly (sometimes for more than two hours), in a choreographed "dance" as the practitioner manipulates the recipient's body around the mat, creating a relaxed, meditative state for both. A full course of Thai massage can be very thorough, including pulling toes, fingers, ears, etc.; walking on the back; cracking the knuckles; arching the back in a rolling motion, etc.

The purpose of Thai massage is to bring the body, mind, and spirit into a state of harmonious balance, providing an opportunity for self-healing. The benefits enjoyed from a Thai massage session may include the following: deep relaxation, stress relief, warmed and stretched muscles, healing energy flow, greater flexibility, increased and focused energy levels, relief from sore muscles and joints, detoxification, and a feeling of confidence and well-being.

Thai massage is highly therapeutic for people in pain from illness or energy. It is also great mental and physical preparation for athletes who are training for a strenuous event. Furthermore, Thai massage is great for people who are preparing for any kind of mental challenge, examination or performance because of the way it helps you to focus energy and attention on the task at hand. If you've yet to experience this ancient form of massage therapy, NYC is home to a number of masters--you will indubitably be in excellent hands.
